CUSTODIAL SERVICES
This division of Physical Plant provides custodial services to the academic and administrative buildings. Each custodial FTE is responsible for cleaning an average of 26,171 ( high of 36,641) gross square feet for a grand total of 1,439,260. The comparable national average is 20,732 square feet. Employee recruitment and retention is a very real problem. For almost three years, 20-30% of custodial positions either vacant or new employees in their probationary period. The department advertises in a 60 mile radius in print, radio, and cable TV and yet have very few, if any, candidates to interview. Attempts have been made to address the low salary offerings, but salaries are still not competitive with area jobs. Modest salary enhancements were implemented within the last 12-18 months, which improved the morale and perhaps retention, but had little effect on recruitment. The custodial function of SDSU is critical to student recruitment, favorable learning environments, employee and faculty morale, and also health and sanitation compliance.
